Algorithmia, sometimes dubbed as “DevOps for AI/ML”, powers the largest public marketplace for algorithms and mission-critical workloads for their enterprise customers. Based in Seattle, Algorithmia is a remote-friendly workplace that can boast to being Gradient Ventures (Google’s AI-focused VC arm) inaugural investment.


Strong customer demand meant the need to grow, and the Algorithmia team were looking to quickly bring in top talent in Engineering and other disciplines.  Having already exhausted their internal referral network, Algorithmia tried a range of recruitment solutions including contingency agencies and an RPO but were unable to meet their hiring goals. Despite a fantastic team an in-demand product, Algorithmia was struggling to attract and hire high-caliber candidates.

They were referred to Recruiting Bandwidth by one of their VC partners, Madrona Venture Group, who often recommend RB  when a quick turnaround is needed.  After some discussion, Algorithmia and Recruiting Bandwidth chose to partner and deploy a fully-managed recruitment solution.

Working closely with Algorithmia’s executive team, Recruiting Bandwidth was able to uncover a number of challenges that were holding their hiring back. To achieve its goals Algorithmia would need a higher volume of qualified candidates, to reduce the timeframe required to run interviews, and to increase conversion rates at every step of the process.


The goal was to build scrappy, economical recruiting solutions that would meet hiring goals and set Algorithmia up for long term success – and to that end Recruiting Bandwidth and Algorithmia took immediate action.

The process began through workshops with key stakeholders including the founding team, hiring managers, staff, and recent hires. Recruiting Bandwidth learned about Algorithmia’s founding story, cutting-edge technology, growing customer-base, mission-driven culture, and previous recruitment wins/losses in detail.

What emerged was the tale of a growing company, a highly innovative and in-demand suite of solutions, and company culture that was evolving towards a remote-first work environment.

To better tell this story and ultimately drive hiring success, Recruiting Bandwidth and Algorithmia went on to implement several key changes.

Employer Value Proposition: Algorithmia has an amazing story – a product on the cutting-edge of AI/ML, with huge ROI, and strong customer demand. It’s commercially and technically interesting to work on, and the company has built a fantastic culture that encourages collaboration, learning, and remote work. They had been doing a great job of educating their customers on why they should buy services – but not their prospective employees on why they should join the team. Together with their founders and marketing team, Recruiting Bandwidth developed a new Employer Value Proposition for Algorithmia. Improved employment branding displayed on their website, career page, and on Job Ads showcased the true value of working at Algorithmia, while focusing on discoverability to boosted product and brand recognition.

Visibility: Recruiting Bandwidth launched a low-cost, high-impact advertising campaign (almost entirely using free options), to ensure the Algorithmia message got in front of the right people, at the right time, nationwide. Social media usage and related profiles on websites such as Glassdoor and AngelList were optimized to drive traffic to Algorithmia’s career page and attract highly qualified candidates.

Process: A robust new interview process was put in place, developed together with the hiring teams, that focused on candidate experience while becoming as streamlined as possible. Comprehensive Interview training was delivered to all involved staff, and their ATS was completely configured to run the process, provide automated reminders as needed, and include simple interview feedback forms to ensure that all interviews were objective, measurable, and that data-driven decisions could be made. 

Once a plan was in place, Recruiting Bandwidth expert recruiters began managing  the end-to-end process as Algorithmia’s internal team – sourcing high-caliber passive candidates while maintaining a strong inbound pipeline, screening and submitting candidates, managing the interview process, keeping stakeholders accountable,  ensuring that nothing fell through the cracks, and regularly reporting on progress to the executive team.


The focus on employment branding, messaging, and visibility transformed Algorithmia into a talent magnet.

Within one week of launch Algorithmia’s application pool skyrocketed from just ~15 per week to over 300 – and sustained an average of over 150 per week for the entire duration of the project.  

Their revamped interview process showed immediate improvement by allowing the hiring teams to make faster and objectively better hiring decisions. Candidate’s time in process dropped sharply and interview conversion rates jumped, while an emphasis on candidate experience drove offer acceptance rates to grow.

In under four months, Algorithmia hit all their hiring goals, including a new full-time internal recruiter that was able to inherit a solid recruiting process. They made eight key, hard-to-find  hires at a fraction the cost of contingent agencies, while attracting nearly 3,000 new applications that are now part of their talent network. Best of all, an end-to-end hiring playbook that allows them to manage their own hiring needs for the foreseeable future.
